TCM Announces 2023 Classic Film Festival Tributes Patrizia von Brandenstein and Russ Tamblyn To Be Honored
Additional Films From Honorees Announced for 2023 TCMFF in Hollywood, April 13-16, 2023
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) today announced it will honor Academy Award®-winning production designer Patrizia von Brandenstein and actor, dancer, choreographer, director and artist Russ Tamblyn during the 14th annual TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood April 13-16, 2023. Festival passes for the annual event are currently on sale.
Each year the TCM Classic Film Festival pays tribute to a select group of individuals whose work in Hollywood has left a lasting impact on film. Von Brandenstein earned critical acclaim for her work on Six Degrees of Separation (1993) and the Academy Award® for Best Art Direction in Amadeus (1984). Tamblyn’s early training as a gymnast prepared him for one of his earliest roles in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), and subsequently earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Peyton Place (1957). All four films will be screened at the Festival with introductions from von Brandenstein and Tamblyn. Both will sit down with TCM Hosts in Club TCM for extended conversations about their lives and work.
“We spend so much time talking about actors and directors, but filmmaking is a collaborative art. Patrizia has been at the top of her game for a long time, and we’re honored to be able to shine this spotlight on her and her craft,” said Ben Mankiewicz, TCM Primetime Host and official host of the TCM Classic Film Festival. “Her movies have the unmistakable touch of her art and impeccable taste.”
“Aside from being one of the really good guys in this business, it’s no accident that Russ was in three of the most seminal movies from the 1950s and early ‘60s,” Mankiewicz added. “It’s impossible to think of the musicals Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and West Side Story without him, and then in between those he made this delicious drama Peyton Place.”

About Russ Tamblyn
Russ Tamblyn’s career as an actor, dancer, choreographer, director and artist has spanned more than six decades. Born December 30th, 1934, into a show business family, Russ has performed in every kind of venue, from small playhouses to Madison Square Garden. His roots began in the heyday of Hollywood; he was discovered by Lloyd Bridges who gave 10-year-old Russ his first part in a play, Stone Jungle. This launched Russ into an extensive career in motion pictures, television, and theater.
Russ’ first motion picture credit came in 1948, when he played a supporting role in The
Boy with Green Hair. Cecil B. DeMille saw a special quality in Russ and cast him as young King Saul in the epic Samson and Delilah. Many films followed, including Father of the Bride and Father’s Little Dividend, in which he portrayed Elizabeth Taylor’s brother. The title role in The Kid from Cleveland was next, but it was his dynamic performance in Warner Brothers’ Retreat Hell that won him a long-term contract with MGM studios. While there, Russ starred in the classic musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, bringing him worldwide fame for his dancing and acting. He also starred opposite Debbie Reynolds in Hit the Deck. His musicality, championship tumbling, and cat-like agility, blending with his strong dramatic skills, made Russ MGM’s Most Popular Young Star!
Russ’ career skyrocketed with an Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting
Actor in the critically acclaimed film, Peyton Place. He also received a Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer. From there, Russ was offered starring roles in some of the hottest films in Hollywood including the title role in tom thumb, Don’t Go Near the Water and The Haunting. Most notably, Russ starred in West Side Story as Riff, leader of the Jets.
Russ continued his first love of the performing arts when he starred in such theater works as Cabaret, Follies, The Music Man, and opposite Chita Rivera in Bye Bye Birdie.
In the ‘60s, seeking a deeper means of self-expression, Russ’ creative focus shifted from the performing arts to the fine arts. His unique work in collage and assemblage brought him recognition in numerous gallery exhibitions and museums, including the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His art and poetry can be found in numerous international art publications.
In this new arena of creativity, Russ was also instrumental in the new Hollywood Indie
Film era which produced the cult classic War of the Gargantuas and Dennis Hopper’s, The Last Movie. He partnered with Neil Young, Dean Stockwell, Devo and Hopper again to co-create the nuclear comedy Human Highway.
Tamblyn’s television credits are many, but he is best known for David Lynch’s iconic
television show Twin Peaks playing Dr. Jacoby, and reprising his character as Doctor Amp 20 years later in Lynch’s final Twin Peaks revival. Russ played “The Dog-Walker God” in his daughter Amber Tamblyn’s series, Joan of Arcadia. In an homage to his role in the original film The Haunting, Tamblyn appeared in the remake of The Haunting of Hill House in Netflix in 2018. His film performance culminates with a memorable cameo in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.
